Digital Digest has Launched!
June 2020 . Volume 1
We are pleased to bring to you the inaugural edition of Digital Digest, a monthly publication for the Community Faculty of The University of New Mexico School of Medicine.
POSTPONED: 2020 Community Faculty Appreciation Day
Each year, the UNM School of Medicine hosts a Community Faculty Appreciation Day to honor your service and contribution toward educating the future doctors of New Mexico.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and responses from Community Faculty on the most recent survey, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the annual Community Faculty Appreciation Day until an in-person event can be scheduled.
Watch the monthly OCF Digital Digest for announcements about a rescheduled event.
Although we cannot gather together for food and fun, we want you to know that you are so appreciated and valued here at the UNM SOM.
Thank you for all that you do!
Virtual Site Visits
We regret that we cannot travel to see you in person this summer; however, we are excited to be able to gather virtually. Join UNM OCF staff, UNM leaders and Community Faculty from your region at one or many of the upcoming virtual meetings to discuss how you can work with UNM to educate future doctor’s for your region.

Thank You, Bill Young and Pinon Family Practice!
When Pinon Family Practice Physician Assistant Bill Young felt the need for an increased UNM School of Medicine presence in Farmington, the 2002 UNM PA Program graduate took action to make real connections.
Thanks to Bill and everyone on the staff at Pinon, that desire led to a truly memorable site visit.
The UNM School of Medicine and the Office for Community Faculty staff and physicians from across the Farmington area were able to engage together in this unique meeting for a time of learning and engagement.
It turned into a wonderful show of collegiality with a common purpose of supporting education for the future healthcare providers of the Farmington area.
Thank you, Bill and Pinon Family Practice, for serving as champions for Community Faculty in your region.
Resuming Rotations: What We Know & What We Don’t Know
As you know, the UNM School of Medicine students have been unable to start or complete their rotations in your clinics, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Medical Doctorate Program
WHAT WE KNOW
The MD class of 2020 was able to successfully graduate on time. No UNM MD student are at sites right now; when students return to clinical rotations, the first group to return will likely be Continuity Clinics in July, all or some of the clinics may be held using Telehealth.
WHAT WE DON'T KNOW
It is unclear when students will return to clinical rotations at this time.
Physical Therapy Program
WHAT WE KNOW
The PT class of 2020 was able to successfully graduate on time. Clinicals are postponed until late spring of 2021. No summer or fall clinical will be held.
WHAT WE DON'T KNOW
It is unclear when students will return to clinical experiences at this time.
Occupational Therapy Program
WHAT WE KNOW
The Occupational Therapy program has rearranged the summer and fall curriculum in order to accommodate remote learning provisions. In regards to fieldwork II, all placements were put on hold as of March 16, 2020, the program is looking into as many Telehealth options as possible for summer rotations.
WHAT WE DON'T KNOW
It is unclear when students will return to fieldwork at this time.
Physician Assistant Program
WHAT WE KNOW
The PA class of 2020 is on track for a slightly postponed graduation in December 2020. A full return to clinical experiences is on hold until mid-July or August, if possible. The department is gearing up to provide Telehealth training, and the program has begun placing a few students in rural areas where the COVID-19 rates are low.
WHAT WE DON'T KNOW
It is unclear when PA students will return to metro areas with high COVID-19 rates at this time.
