Panelists and Presenters Needed: Health Professions Symposium
With the growing number of pre-health students at the University of New Mexico and the surrounding universities, student pre-health organizations at the University of New Mexico wished to strengthen student resources and came together to establish the annual Health Professions Symposium to recruit, inspire, and educate their community’s future health professionals.
Since 2017, HPS has given high-school and undergraduate students access to a vast amount of information in the form of nearly 90 workshops, panels, and seminars, presented by local health professionals from a wide variety of fields dedicated to the betterment of their communities. In doing this, HPS has become one of the largest conferences in the southwest with a capacity of 1000 attendees and volunteers, all the while helping students make informed decisions on possible careers in healthcare.
This year, the Office for Community Faculty at the School of Medicine is partnering with the UNM HPS to get our Community Faculty involved.
On April 9, 2022 you are invited to serve on a panel of interdisciplinary professionals to share your experiences and provide students with relevant insight into working in your healthcare profession.
If you are interested in joining the SOM OCF Panel, please email [email protected].
Help bring Rural Students to the Health Professions Symposium
OCF is looking for community faculty in rural New Mexico who are interested in helping students from across the state access the Health Professions Symposium in 2022. If you or your practice/clinic location are interested providing space for virtual participation and/or in providing transportation for students in your areas to attend, please contact Ashley Salazar at [email protected].

HATS Off! Ceremony
SPOTLIGHT: Dominic Lundquist
“Providing service to the less fortunate is something that has always
been extremely meaningful to me. During my undergraduate
degree, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work
with underprivileged youth as a volunteer tutor as well as
volunteering in the emergency department in a medically
underserved area. I have also helped serve my community during
the pandemic by aiding in assembling meals that were distributed to
disadvantaged communities greatly impacted from Covid 19.
Coming into medical school, I wanted to continue providing service to the
community and I am thankful to have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Joyce
Phillips, Brandon Trujillo, and Annslee Lowe in creating a service project for
Gratitude Tuesday in which we were able to raise funds and collect donated items to
provide winter clothing items and hygiene supplies for the homeless in our
community in partnership with Healthcare for the Homeless. We were also able to
raise awareness and recruit volunteers to help with Dr. Anthony Fleg’s and the Native
Health Initiative’s Gratitude Run which celebrated the community and helped
promote physical activity and community health. We are excited to use what we’ve
learned from coordinating last year’s project to help us improve the service project for
this year’s Gratitude Tuesday.”
The Annual George Kennedy HATS Off! ceremony seeks to recognize the outstanding acts of humanism, activism, talent, and service of the UNM Medical Students.

Continuity Clinic: Preceptors Needed
The Continuity Clinic experiences provide integrated activities that focus on sequential skill-building opportunities that include the biological, population and behavioral perspectives. Continuity experiences allow students to work with physicians who have long-term relationships with patients, families, multidisciplinary health care teams and mentors.
If you are a community faculty member in the UNMH system or local Albuquerque area interested in precepting for a student in Continuity Clinic, reach out to Erin Bouquin, MD at [email protected].
Continuity Clinic Highlights
Continuity Clinic (CC).
During the CC experience, students complete 10 half-day clinic sessions over a one-year period from March 2022-March 2023. The goal is to practice history-taking and physical exam skills. Students complete a note and one learning issue for each session.
