2020 Distinguished Alumnus Awards

The true measure of the UNM School of Medicine's greatness is found in the achievements of its alumni. The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes alumni who have made significant contributions to society, and whose accomplishments, affiliations and careers exemplify the School of Medicine’s legacy of excellence.

Francine Gaillour, MD, aims to build a coaching culture in healthcare, so she founded the Physician Coaching Institute. Her goal is to help women and minorities become physician leaders. Earlier in her career, Dr. Gaillour led teams that developed the earliest models of electronic medical records and clinical data analytics. Her articles have appeared in numerous national publications.

Thanks to Dr. Gaillour for inspiring future generations of doctors!​

Biatris Barrera, MD, is an OBGYN at Presbyterian Española, where she is passionate about working with rural, underserved populations. She focuses on improving patient and newborn outcomes through encouraging evidence-based breastfeeding techniques. She has also worked to improve access to long-acting reversible contraception.

Thanks to Dr. Barrera for making a difference in New Mexico’s rural communities!

2020 Leonard M. Napolitano Award

The Leonard M. Napolitano, PhD, Award recognizes an alumnus who, like Dr. Napolitano, has built strong public and private partnerships while successfully advocating for and showing dedication to the School of Medicine and its patients through innovation and commitment to education.

Paul Roth, MD, MS, spent his entire career aiming to improve the health of New Mexicans. He served as chancellor of UNM Health Sciences for 14 years and Dean of the School of Medicine for 26 years. He also founded the UNM Center of Disaster Medicine and created the nation’s first civilian Disaster Medical Assistance Team. He formed the La Tierra Sagrada Society in 2003, a scholarship organization that has provided over $1 million in student scholarships across health professions. Thanks to Dr. Roth for his many years of hard work. His impact, both on medical students and the population of New Mexico, cannot be overstated.​

2020 Visionary Site Awardees

These awardees have made significant contributions to society. Their accomplishments, affiliations and careers honor The University of New Mexico School of Medicine’s legacy of excellence and mission to advance the health of all New Mexicans.


During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Alumni Association opted to award societies and community groups which served the greater community by providing resources and communicating with the healthcare community -- including the students and physicians at UNM.  Thank you for your efforts during this difficult year.
